Goodbye for now...

That's a wrap on summer programs! Thanks to all 370 children who participated in the TD Summer Reading Club and thanks to those who attended programs. We had a blast meeting all of you, getting to know you and learning new things together. We said let's GO and you followed which we greatly appreciate.

On Thursday, AUGUST 15 (10:30-11:30 for ages 8-12) - CJCS/107 MIX FM will welcome our "For the Love of Arts" program group on a tour of their building located at 376 Romeo Street South. Children will also have the chance to speak to local radio personnel!

Art Studio


Come out to our SPL Art Studio on Tuesdays (Primary, ages 5-8 @ 1:00-2:00) (Junior, ages 9-12 @ 2:00-3:00). 

This is one of our most popular programs – so you’re sure to see some of your friends, and even make some new ones!

Friend of the Stratford Shakespearean Festival, Terrie Wilks, will be running a drama workshop about PIRATES in the SPL Auditorium (Thursday 10:30-11:30 for ages 8-12) which will also include a display of actual festival costumes!

Beat the Heat


PLEASE NOTE:
Our usual program of Beat the Heat on Mondays at the lions pool from 1:30-2:00 will be cancelled due to the holiday.  
See you on August 12!
Each child that attends the program will receive a ticket for a free swim at 2:00 that day!  Stay cool and see you then :)

Whale of a Tale


On Monday nights from 6:30-7:15 in the SPL Auditorium, ages 0-6 and families can come in for a bedtime story.  Wear your PJs and bring a stuffed toy friend if you want, and enjoy some stories, songs, and a craft!

Next week is a holiday, but we’ll see you on August 12, when the theme will be… Creepy Crawlies!

The Little family adopt a charming young mouse named Stuart, but the family cat wants rid of him.  Come and watch, STUART LITTLE!

The movie starts at 6:30pm in the SPL Auditorium.  This movie is rated PG, and the running time is 84 minutes.

Special Events in "For the Love of Arts"

“For the Love of Arts” (Thursday 10:30-11:30 for ages 8-12) is having special guests/trips in the upcoming weeks that require registration!

August 1 - Photographer, Scott Wishart, from the Beacon Herald will be joining us in the SPL Auditorium to teach the kids about photography and then they will head over to Shakespeare Gardens (weather permitting) to take some pictures. BYO camera!

Did you love SLIME?


OOEY GOOEY SLIIIIIME!

Thanks to everyone that came out today to make slime!

If you want to make it again, here is the recipe:
1/2 cup white glue mixed with 1/2 cup water (add food colouring if you want).  In another bowl, mix 1/2 cup water and 1 tbsp borax and stir.  Mix them together and you have slime!

Tales Under the Tent

Need something to do tomorrow?
Tales under the Tent (1:00-1:30) for ages 6-12 and families-- Stories and activities related to the play on the stage at the Festival Theater that afternoon.  Look for the tent between the Discovery Centre and Upper Queen's Park.  Tomorrow is Fiddler on the Roof!

SPL's Art Studio

We had an amazing time in both Art Studio Primary and Art Studio Junior yesterday.  It was our finger painting extravaganza, and we worked with pudding, tempera paint, milk, shaving cream, and much more! 

Make sure to come out next week, when we are making OOEY GOOEY SLIME!!

Want to try the Milk Art at home?
Pour 2% milk (or higher fat content) onto a paper plate.
Drop a few drops of food colouring into the milk.
Pour a few drops of dish soap onto your finger.
Draw in the milk and watch it turn into a kaleidoscope!

Let's Go!

Are you ready to travel to different libraries throughout Perth County?

The Amazing Race Perth County begins on July 2. You can pick up your race card at any library and your goal is to receive stamps from all 5 libraries in Perth County (Stratford, St. Marys, Milverton, Mitchell and Listowel). Each library has a great challenge planned for you to complete which will earn you a stamp on your card. When your card is complete, enter it into a draw for amazing prizes.

Amazing race cards will be ready for pick up shortly!

Erick Traplin will launch off this summer’s TD Summer Reading Club with his fun-filled children’s concert - JULY 5

Erick’s shows appeal to kids of all ages and is sure to be the hit of your child’s summer!  He sings, plays guitar and harmonica and uses digital technology to enhance his accompaniment. Erick also brings a tub full of fun and surprises for all!

Book Buddies!


Keep literacy alive this summer with this amazing and FREE program at The Stratford Public Library!

Kids 5-12 can sign up for 30 minute time slots to work one-on-one with a trained SPL volunteer on Thursdays from 2:00-4:00.  Book Buddies is available in both English and French to help children maintain and improve their reading throughout the summer.

Meet this year’s TD Summer Reading club artist, Matt James!


Matt is a noted painter, illustrator and musician, who lives in Toronto, Ontario. He has illustrated the picture books Yellow Moon, Apple Moon by Pamela Porter, I Know Here by Laurel Croza and most recently Northwest Passage by Stan Rogers. He is currently working with Laurel on the pictures for the sequel to I Know Here.

The books that Matt has illustrated have won many awards, including the New Mexico Book Award, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award and the Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award.

GO! Get Ready for the TD Summer Reading Club at SPL!

Excitement is buzzing at the Stratford Public Library over the programs that will be launching soon for this summer! 

Cool down on hot summer days in the library with fun activities including stories, songs, crafts, and many programs that will have your children eager to continue and enhance their love of reading.  

Registration for the TD Summer Reading Club will begin on June 17, 2013.  Registration is quick, and only takes a minute or two.  Upon registration, you child will be given an activity book and passport to track their summer reading.  Bring the passport each week to receive a sticker and a code to unlock new levels of fun at the TD Summer Reading Club 2013 website.  

We can’t wait to see you at the library for registration, and we hope that you’re getting as excited as we are!
